"Imperfect Action is Better Than Inaction"

Product designer Aleksandr Volodkovich believes that action, even if it’s not totally perfect, is always better than inaction. “The best piece of advice I’ve ever heard is that it’s better to do something poorly than to do nothing at all,” he says. This drive to create, combined with his personal philosophy of creating precise and conscientious design that cuts through the clutter, helps him make sense of a complex world.

Volodkovich discovered his love for design in 2015. “I first learned about freelancing and became inspired by the idea of working remotely,” he says. Excited and motivated by the possibilities, Volodkovich invested in a laptop and started learning Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator from scratch. “Just a month later, I completed my first project and designed business cards,” he says. “That was my starting point in design.”

He quickly discovered that his real talent lay in designing websites. “I completed several online courses, actively studied YouTube lessons, and constantly worked on improving my skills,” Volodkovich says. “I also attended meetings and conferences to stay updated on the latest trends and exchange experiences with other professionals.” The enhanced learning and networking helped him graduate from entry-level work to more complex projects and further deepened his knowledge and appreciation of design.

Volodkovich’s design approach starts with gaining a deep understanding of user needs and business goals with the objective of creating a practical, intuitive, and in-demand solution. “I actively conduct research, gather user feedback, and analyze data to ensure that my design addresses real problems,” he says. “At the same time, I collaborate closely with the development, marketing, and other teams to integrate design into the overall product strategy. It’s not just about the visual aspect but also how the product will function, scale, and deliver long-term value to the business.”

He starts with strategy, letting it set the direction and relying on data, analytics, and research to lead the path. “Creativity helps to find unique, unexpected solutions that make the product stand out in the market,” Volodkovich says. “I strive to create a balance between these aspects, where every creative idea is backed by logic and brings real value to the product, making it more functional and appealing to users.”

This meticulous process makes the art of balancing different projects without getting burned out tricky, but Volodkovich manages it by setting the right priorities and planning out his time carefully. “I break my work into blocks, making sure to leave time for breaks and rest,” he says. “I delegate tasks when possible and automate routine processes. It’s important to establish clear boundaries between work and personal life to keep the balance.”

At the end of the day, Volodkovich’s payoff comes in the satisfaction of knowing that his work has a genuine impact. “The feeling that I’m solving real problems and doing something useful is so inspiring and motivating,” he says.
