Radial Magazine dissects all things design including project, furniture, interior, and fashion from regions around the world. Each issue introduces influential and upcoming designers and spaces inspired by their culture. Issue 1 looks at Scandinavian design from the perspectives of furniture, fashion designers GANNI and Cecile Bahnsen, and interior designers Open House to rewrite and redefine the tropes of Scandinavian fashion and design.
Interior designer Rachel Dougan who owns ViVi Interiors called Scandinavian design a “lifestyle”. She says, “But Swedish design has no place for clutter because clutter ruins the lines. It begs to be left alone so that air and light can circulate through it.” Inspired by her words, the spread and page layout takes on a module-like structure with the text and image fitting together precisely.
Headlines, subtitles, names and emphasis are in PP Editorial New and all other body text is in Univers. PP Editorial New is a mix of retro and contemporary style making it suitable for the dichotomy of stereotyped and renew of Scandinavian design. The narrow serif highlights the lines so prevalent in the look and lifestyle.
The color treatment brings a cool, mature approach to the common pastel color palette in Scandinavian design. The layout, composition, typography, and color work together to create a harmony while bringing a fresh perspective through a changing narrative.
