The Bard Prison Initiative (BPI) is a program of Bard College that provides college education to people in seven New York State prisons. Our work for the BPI spans across all communications channels from branding, content, and digital marketing strategy to web design, advertising, video, and social media. For their second Annual Report titled “Making it Count,” we consciously elevated the brand through bold editorial style, captivating portraits, and meaningful writing and interviews. Graphically, we used the visual device of a forward slash to allow playful instances of powerful type traveling into and out of the slash, tying into the idea that BPI’s work is instrumental in defining the future landscape of college-in-prison. This was applied to numbers-based graphics as well. We commissioned renowned photographer Beowulf Sheehan to capture heartfelt portraits of some important voices at BPI. Accompanying the portraits, snippets of interviews with the subjects allowed readers to understand how transformational the last year has been for the organization and what more will be done in the future.
