"Design is always changing, so be open to new trends and tech. Experiment with your creativity, try different styles, and don’t be afraid to take risks"

Qichao An, the official Design Director and unofficial Design Magician of Wuhan Mornice Brand Design Co., Ltd., believes the one trick to becoming an outstanding designer is having a deep passion for life. “Your design style often reflects your attitude toward life and emotional state,” he says. “Therefore, it’s crucial to maintain a keen interest in life, as it will inspire your creativity and design ideas. In the design process, keeping a sharp, observational eye is particularly important, and discovering the subtle nuances in everyday life that might go unnoticed can become the highlight of your design.”

An’s advice for up-and-coming designers is simple: stay curious and keep learning. “Design is always changing, so be open to new trends and tech. Experiment with your creativity, try different styles, and don’t be afraid to take risks,” he says. An also emphasizes the importance of having a solid foundational understanding of the craft by mastering basics like layout, color, typography, and user experience. “It’s your design toolkit,” he says.

His philosophy centers around anticipation and home, with a continuous and unwavering passion for the future. “I firmly believe that life is filled with limitless possibilities, and each new day presents a fresh opportunity waiting to be discovered and seized,” he says. “Exploring the unknown and excavating one’s potential are crucial driving forces in my life. This belief empowers me to face challenges positively, courageously, and steadfastly. Regardless of the magnitude of pressure or adversity, I know that I can find a solution through effort and wisdom.”

An acknowledges his Chinese heritage as integral to his design voice. “Chinese traditional culture has profoundly influenced design, encompassing the use of color, pattern design, and inspiration drawn from nature and philosophy,” he says. “Elements from traditional culture such as dragons, phoenixes, and clouds often appear in designs, infusing the work with unique cultural significance.”

He discovered his love of and aptitude for design during high school. “I vividly remember dedicating myself to creating a personal logo during art class,” An says. “The logo wasn’t just a graphic; it embodied my understanding of aesthetics and creativity, serving as a visual expression of my emotions and thoughts.”

The logo earned high praise from his teachers and classmates, prompting An to seek out design projects actively. “I began designing distinctive logos for the class and producing eye-catching posters,” he says. “The process not only honed my design skills but also made me realize the power of design to forge connections among people and convey emotions and ideas.”

An’s passion for life extends beyond design and includes drawing inspiration from unlikely sources, like antique markets and classic architecture. “There’s something about the intricate details, craftsmanship, and stories embedded in historical structure and vintage artifacts that sparks my creativity,” he says. “Whether it’s the weathered texture of a centuries-old door or the design of an ancient piece of pottery, these elements often trigger unique ideas and perspectives that I can infuse into my modern design work. It’s like uncovering hidden treasures in the past and giving them a contemporary twist.”

He also derives joy and strength from his family. “I believe that my family is the constant source of my drive and inspiration,” An says. “Particularly, my daughter is an unwavering force propelling me forward and sparking deeper levels of creativity. Regardless of the challenge I face, seeing the smiles of my loved ones reinforces my determination and fuels my efforts.”
